A frequent error in historiographical research is the treatment as different entities of a population that is designated with different names in different literary sources. The present intervention addresses the issue of the identity of the Ulichians attested in the 9th-10th centuries by many well-known documents such as Descriptio civitatum et regionum ad septentrionalem plagam Danubii and The Tale of Bygone Years: this name is derived from the Turk-Mongolian term ulaq, which translates the Byzantine term vlah.
